Ben Coates
Benjamin Coates is a composer, producer, engineer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist based in Kent, Ohio. Discovering a love for the drum kit at age 6, he has spent most of his life honing his craft in the studio and in live arenas. Drums and rhythm are central to how Benjamin thinks about music, even on other instruments. To him, a rooted foundation in rhythm is integral to success on any instrument- and the main idea underlying all musical situations is one of spreading joy and connection.
At 10, he picked up both the guitar and bass guitar, and at 13, started a recording project called Harborer that as of 2026 has released 4 full length studio albums. With many studio and live credits under his belt (such as playing for accomplished musicians in the area such as Matt Corey, Chris Wintrip, Josee McGee, Bethany Joy, Ray Flanagan, and various others), music is a constant passion in Benjamin’s life, one that he is eager to share with others.
Benjamin has continued his journey in music consistently throughout his life in many ways. Pursuing musical education since age 7, he has studied techniques in drums and guitar performance privately for over a decade. Additionally, he has had over 7 years of experience as a bandleader in rock, jazz, and pop styles.
Benjamin now lives in Kent, Ohio, where he divides his time between composing and recording songs for a new solo project, slated to release in early 2027, and acting as the executive producer behind the African rock stylings of solo act Maseh Nchang. You can also catch him in Cleveland providing bass guitar for “glam-ericana” act Cowboy Princess Brigade, and the Sufjan Stevens tribute ensemble We’re All Gonna Die.
