Rachel Roberts

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

Singer-Songwriter-Guitarist Rachel Roberts is a touring performer and artist.

Let your creativity shine! Writing songs from the age of ten, Rachel Roberts knows that building confidence through expression and creativity is crucial to developing up-and-coming stars. A classically trained mezzo-soprano, Rachel teaches and sings a range of repertoire and genres: commercial and contemporary music, Broadway musicals, classical selections, blues, rock, and improv styles.

Rachel’s vocal teaching emphasizes “bel canto” or “beautiful singing” first. All vocal students will learn classical techniques to harness and protect their voices in myriad genres. Along with stage-performing methods, students will also practice theory, solfege, and memorization.

Singer-songwriter students will workshop their songs and stage presence with Rachel. These lessons will focus on the combination of lyrical, vocal, and instrumental integrity and quality. Students will widen their ability through lyrical prompts, find their vocal style and brand, and explore new voice phrasings and rhythmic patterns.

*Singer-songwriters must be willing to use their voice and must play a secondary instrument.

Depending on the personal goal of the student, there are opportunities to learn microphone techniques, how to run a PA system, record a three-song demo, perform at a local event, or learn how to book and promote gigs.

Rachel Roberts has released five albums, has written music for Chicago advertising company Leo Burnett, and performed over 3,000 shows nationally. She was the band leader and composer for Rachel’s Secret Stache and Sexis Sixes. She currently performs solo and with her rock band Rachel Roberts and the Ruthless and her doo-wop duo Babies in Black. Rachel Roberts teaches music and college English at Our Lady of the Elms in Akron.
